Sustainable Agriculture & Food Security

Bapuji Youth Association (BYA) works with rural farming communities to strengthen agricultural livelihoods and improve household food security. Small and marginal farmers often face challenges such as limited access to irrigation, quality seeds, rising input costs, declining soil fertility and increasing dependence on rainfall.

Our approach focuses on helping farmers make better use of local resources, sustainable agricultural practices and appropriate farm inputs to improve productivity while protecting the soil, water and natural environment on which rural livelihoods depend.

For families living in poverty, regular transportation expenses can become a significant burden. As a result, children may attend school irregularly, miss lessons and, in some cases, eventually drop out.

Through practical support, farmer training and community-based agricultural initiatives, BYA seeks to strengthen the resilience and economic security of farming families.

1. Irrigation Support for Farmers

Reliable water is essential for productive agriculture. BYA has supported rural farmers through irrigation borewell initiatives, helping farming communities access water for cultivation and reduce dependence on uncertain rainfall.

Improved access to irrigation can help farmers make better use of their land, strengthen agricultural productivity and create more stable livelihood opportunities. BYA has previous experience implementing irrigation borewell projects for rural communities.

2. Seed Support for Poor Farmers

Access to quality seeds can be a significant challenge for economically disadvantaged farming families. BYA has supported poor farmers through seed distribution, helping them access essential agricultural inputs for cultivation.

The initiative aims to reduce the initial input burden on vulnerable farmers while encouraging productive use of their land and strengthening household food and livelihood security.

3. Vermicompost & Organic Manure

BYA has promoted vermicompost production as an environmentally sustainable method of producing organic manure from locally available resources.

Vermicompost helps improve soil quality and provides farmers with a natural source of nutrients for crops. BYA has implemented vermicompost units in rural communities, including 50 vermicompost units through its earlier collaboration with CAPART.

The initiative also helps farmers reduce dependence on costly external inputs while encouraging more sustainable agricultural practices.

4. Organic Farming Training

BYA provides training and awareness on organic and sustainable farming practices, helping rural farmers understand the benefits of natural inputs and environmentally responsible cultivation.

Farmers are introduced to practical approaches that can improve soil health, reduce unnecessary chemical dependency and promote more sustainable use of agricultural resources.

5. Agricultural Classes & Farmer Field Schools

Practical learning is an important part of BYA’s agricultural approach. Through agricultural classes and Farmer Field School-based learning, farmers receive knowledge that can be applied directly to their fields.

The sessions encourage farmers to learn through practical experience, exchange knowledge and understand improved methods of cultivation, soil management, organic inputs, crop care and efficient use of water.

6. Sustainable & Climate-Resilient Farming

BYA promotes agricultural practices that help rural communities respond to changing environmental and climatic conditions. The programme encourages soil conservation, efficient water use, organic inputs, crop diversification and other locally appropriate sustainable practices.

The objective is to help farmers strengthen the resilience of their farms while protecting the natural resources that support agriculture.

7. Food Security & Household Well-Being

Agriculture is closely connected to household food security. By improving access to agricultural resources, strengthening farming practices and supporting sustainable production, BYA seeks to help rural families improve both their food availability and livelihood security.

The programme promotes the idea that stronger and more resilient farming communities can contribute to healthier families, improved incomes and reduced vulnerability to poverty.

OUR APPROACH

WATER → SEEDS → KNOWLEDGE → SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES → BETTER HARVESTS → STRONGER LIVELIHOODS

BYA’s agricultural initiatives are designed to combine practical support with knowledge and capacity building. Rather than focusing only on providing inputs, we aim to strengthen farmers’ ability to use available resources effectively and adopt practices that can benefit them over the long term.

Our Commitment

We believe that sustainable agriculture is not only about producing more—it is about building stronger farming communities while protecting the resources on which future generations depend.

Through irrigation support, seed assistance, vermicompost, organic farming education and practical farmer training, Bapuji Youth Association works towards more resilient agriculture, improved food security and sustainable livelihoods for rural farming communities.
